I realized why I drive the stuff I do

Monday, July 5th, 2010

I’ve been trying to remember some of the toy trucks I had when I was a kid. I didn’t really remember the names of them, but I did remember what they did. Between Google and YouTube, I’ve had good results tracking down the names of the toys and even old commercials! I guess it’s no wonder that I wound up into 4x4s and ATVs.

I usually despise The Onion, but this made me laugh.

Thanks Shannon!

I guess the price fluctuates a bit

I was interested in getting a $50 pair of headphones for $10 until Amazon wanted an additional $6 to ship earbuds.  Seriously?  You could ball them up and ship them in a standard mailing envelope!  Heh, yeah, no deal.  But I chuckled even more at the thought of paying almost $400 for a used pair.

My first mod in at least 4 years

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

I used to always have something going on my truck.  Since I’ve had it back on the road, it’s been all work and no play and I haven’t done any extras to it short of super-glueing the LED from my Iron Man Halloween costume in the lid of the tool box.

Last week my buddy Jay turned me on to a company called Super Bright LEDs that sells drop-in, low-wattage, bright-as-shit LEDs as replacement lamps for turn signals, brake lights, back up lights, etc.  A blinding Surefire LED flashlight runs at 80 lumens.  I bought back up lights that were 130 lumens.

I tried to put one in in the the dark last night and only succeeded in turning the LED housing loose from the base.  A little Super Glue fixed that today.  I realized that due to the size and shape of the LED’s aluminum housing, it wasn’t able to seat as deeply as a standard incandescent bulb.  After some additional test fitting, I decided that removing about 1/8″ of the fluting around the LED housing would make it fit.

I used a Dremel on high with a small sanding wheel.  It took about 30 minutes to do both LEDs.  I didn’t want them to get too hot, so I took frequent short breaks for them to cool down.  It’s not pretty, but it worked!

I tried to take some decent pics, but it was around 5 pm and even closed up in the shop with the lights out, it was fairly bright.  On paper and first hand these LEDs are much brighter but these pictures actually make the incandescent bulb look like it puts out more light.  I haven’t actually gotten to try them in the dark yet.  I’ll update this after I do.

Trucks that go on the beach

And are driven regularly with the windows down are a bad combination for CD players.  Mine was acting up and I decided to just hook up a cable so that everything played from my iPod.  When I pulled it out, this is what I found.

Bear in mind that this CD player is from about 2004 and the truck was parked for just over 3 years between 05 and 08.  That’s Carova Beach sprinkled on top of (and most likely also inside of) it.  Gotta love it!

After tipping it upside down to install the cable, I guess whatever was in it that was messing it up either fell out or fell in deeper.  Either way, my CD playback problems have disappeared.  It’s tought to beat Kenwood for a reliable product.

I think Radio Shack is the next to fail

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Why?  Because of this.

This stupid little cable lets you plug your iPod into receiver that has a CD changer you’re not using.  (This stupid little cable is actually pretty ingenious, but anyway.)  I found it on eBay, which will put one in my mailbox in 3-5 days for $2.68.  Not bad at all.

Just for fun, I called Radio Shack to see if they carried them.  It’s worth a small premium to be able to put one in hand now and everybody likes the idea of being able to do business nearby to support their local economy.  Radio Shack has them for $7.49.

The nearst location to me wouldn’t even bother to pick up the phone this afternoon.  (They did have the same answering machine as my parents, so I was tempted to leave a message that said, “Hey Ma, call me back.”)  That puts me at the next closest location, which is about 7 miles away.  I thought about hopping in the truck, but then I thought about time, gas and rush hour.

14 miles at the federally-suggested 50.5¢ a mile is $7.07, which is almost as much as the plug itself.  Add in tax at Radio Shack and this $3 gizmo ends up costing $14.93 and that’s before you factor in an hour worth of time to fight traffic, a mall parking lot, and getting the kid behind the counter to actually find the part.  I think I’ll sit here and wait on the mailman.

Saved any money lately by shopping on line?  Tell me about it.

I finally got bitten on eBay

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

Aside from food and gas, almost everything I’ve bought over the past 5 years or so has been online.  The real deals don’t exist in brick and mortar stores.  Of everything I’ve ever bought online, I haven’t had a problem with anything except a single unimportant missing gasket on a set of tail lights I bought for the truck years ago.

Sometimes I will opt to pay more to get something now.  Last week I bought an iPod.  I could have saved a decent chunk of change online, but I was in no mood to be patient.  I cancelled Sirius and was about to go nuts trying to appease myself with broadcast radio.  I ran up to WalMart on my lunch break and grabbed a black 4th gen Nano.  I have really enjoyed it a lot.

I came home and setup iTunes and started transferring songs.  I also started shopping for accessories.  The first thing I ordered was an iTrip FM modulator.  Locally, they’re about $50.  On eBay, I paid $10 including shipping.  (Make him an offer for $6.01and decline the insurance.)

I also wanted a case.  The first thing I found was the waterproof Armor Case but they’re not actually available yet.  In the mean time, I settled for the Naked Case.  Direct from the manufacturer, they are $22.99 shipped.  On eBay, I found one for $12.50 with free shipping.  I ordered it Saturday and it came today, even though Sunday and Monday no mail ran.  That was incredibly fast!

Unfortunately, it arrived with scratches inside of it.  It came in retail packaging but it appears to be slightly used.  The seller was listed as Shao Xia Ma from San Francisco, CA.  He had 100% feedback and claimed to be an official distributor for the product’s manufacturer.  Everything seemed legit, but this is what came today.

I know I was just eventually going to scratch completely destroy the case myself, but it still sucks to get something halfway worn out that you expected to be new.

I’ve contacted the manufacturer to see if they’ll hook anything up and I’m getting ready to e-mail the original seller who has conveniently disappeared from eBay.  We’ll see what happens.

*UPDATE*

On 2-18-09 I received an e-mail back from the seller.  It reads:

please return the item back to us and we would process a replacement for once we get the origiaal back, sorry for the inconvenience.

Sounds simple enough but I’m completely leery of sending anything back to a seller that doesn’t exist anymore.  I’d rather have a scratched case than no case, and getting something used for $12.50 is definitely better than getting nothing for $12.50.  Besides, this is just a temporary case anyway until I can get my Otterbox.

I guess even Verizon has opted to outsource their customer service.  Just for fun, I went and priced a USB broadband device.  I currently receive a 15% discount on accessories and service through my employer.  The purchase process had an option to chat with cusomer service.  I guess I could have been a little more patient, but then I might not have had anything to post about.  :-D

Give her the right gadget and she goes to town.  I watched her get every acorn off ¼ acre of my parents’ yard yesterday because she was having fun with the leaf blower.  I need to make her one of these next!

What does your desktop look like?

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

My actual desktop PC is always a testbed and gaming rig, so there’s weird stuff everywhere.

The laptop is a different story.  It only does a few jobs:  web browsing, e-mail, light gaming and other stuff on the go, so I keep it pretty simple.
